65 Days of Christmas

I can't believe I haven't posted any of the holiday stuff I've been working on lately (oh wait, it's because I've been crazy busy working on it, but that's no excuse)! I love it, I love working on improving it, and I REALLY love working in an industry that starts on the holiday print campaign in October. P.S. Sadly these are only the rejected concepts since the approved designs won't be out until Dec. 8th, but I don't love them any less.

Gap Logo Debacle

I don't usually weigh in on these things but since my roommate works at El Gapo (our affectionate nickname courtesy of Jack Mcfarland) and I consider the "new" logo truly terrible, I'm speaking out. I also wanted to see what I could come up with in a fixed amount of time. After all, it's easy to criticize bad design, it's much harder to come up with a better solution. So I gave myself some fake parameters (this has to be a REAL challenge) and came up with these solutions.

Parameters:
1 lunch hour (concepting + computer rendering)
Use Gap blue
San-serif type-faces only (I figure they reserve the serifs for Banana Republic)

And by the way, I already know that doing this in my spare time is crazy and enters me into some new category of design nerd but I simply can't help myself.

My first idea, again, I always have a special place in my heart for the first idea. Isn't the "A" so gappish?!

I liked the idea of a literal gap so I tried one with the "A".

Three ideas in one hour, not exactly remarkable, but at least they're not in Helvetica.

O, Canada

Over the Labor Day weekend a couple friends and I went on a road-trip from Chicago to Toronto and Niagara Falls. The best part of the trip was definitely seeing Niagara but, being the complete package design nerd I am, I also fell in love with these Jones bottles. I haven't been able to find them this side of the border so I'm considering them my favorite souvenirs.

Judd Lightyear & Robots

My good friend Judd is an amazing illustrator (SEE), so I challenged him to illustrate an outrageously happy robot for me (I have a small obsession with robots). Of course, he did an awesome job.

The Plaid Lab

The Plaid Lab a.k.a. the "creative enterprise" of Mark Saunders is over-flowing with awesome work, from wrapping paper to websites, but the business cards were what caught my eye today. They were featured on Beast Pieces, the sweet letterpress studio that made them. They're so awesome I just had to put them up! P.S. I love letterpress.

Logomania

After working at Bally a little over a year now, I was recently offered a project that departed from my usual page-layout work: design a "fun","energetic","modern" logo for a large variety of health/fitness products. I've always wanted to do more illustrations/logo work, so this was a great little break (and by little break I mean three day/millions of revisions project). Although they didn't pick my favorite one, it was nice giving InDesign a rest and opening up Illustrator.

Art for a Cause

I've loved the work of The Heads of State guys for years, and they continuously earn my respect by creating great work. The newest posters they designed are not only amazing but the proceeds go to clean up efforts in the gulf!

Poster Maker

Tom's assistant saw the posters I did for Dave and asked me to make him a birthday poster! I love getting paid for this :)

We are dead at work today so I designed some going away posters for our super health conscience Senior Director of Business Development. It's going to be hard replacing someone as entertaining as Dave.

Finally starting a blog to keep my favorite visual things/inspiration/lists/work/snapshots together. Today I found some awesome inspiration and designed a couple options for the new Bally recovery shake punch-card promotion. They'll probably be changed from how they look now, but I like em.
